Attic Insulation Improvement Plan
Adding insulation in the attic is one of the best ways to make a home more energy efficient. It helps control temperature throughout the house, reduces heating and cooling costs, and improves indoor air quality.
Most homes in insulation contractor climates have insufficient attic and wall insulation, and adding insulation is a cost-effective and quick way to improve comfort. In addition to making a home more energy efficient, improved attic insulation can also help prevent the formation of dangerous ice dams in winter.
Start by entering your attic and carefully inspecting the existing insulation. Check that the insulation material is level with or below the attic floor joists, and add more if necessary. In addition to insulating the attic, air sealing and ventilation are important to maximize efficiency.
When you’re ready to begin the attic insulating project, gather all the necessary tools and supplies and set aside enough time for the work. Work early in the day so that you can work outside of peak heating and cooling hours. Make sure you are well-lit while working and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to install insulation properly. Don’t squish insulation; it must be allowed to expand fully in order to maintain its performance.
In addition to insulating the walls, you should also insulate the attic access hatch. If your attic has vermiculite insulation, do not disturb it unless you have had it tested for asbestos by an approved lab. Also, if your attic has recessed lights or other fixtures with canopies, be sure to create barriers between the ceiling and the insulation to avoid fire hazards.
